Saturday Children's Program

The Children's Program will be a day of workshops and exploration for Grades K-8 at the CT Science Center and arts workshops for Grades 3-6 at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, both located in downtown Hartford.  Transportation from the Hilton and lunch are included.  Meet at Hilton at 8:30am.

For Grades K-2
Bubble-ology Plus:  Captivating, colorful and fun to make, bubbles are also excellent demonstrations of scientific phenomena.  Bubble-ology Plus is a motivating and powerful introduction to the process and substance of science.  This workshop will investigate which soap detergent produces the best bubble solution...and it's good, clean fun!
Polymers:  It's gooey, slippery, sticky, really slimy and kids love it!  Students will delve into the properties behind different polymers and make their own to take home.
Exhibit Gallery Challenge:  Water & Structures
For Grades 3-5
Wing It - The Science of Aerodynamics:  Participants will take flight and soar as they learn the science of aerodynamics!  Morning session includes working with a wind tunnel to explore the four fundamental forces of flight and the properties of air.  Using  exhibit galleries as labs, the afternoon session culminates by designing and testing various craft to float in an air stream that maximizes weight, flies the highest, flies the longest, and more.

For Grades 6-8
Robotics:  What is a Robot?  How do they work?  What can be done with them?  All of these things and more will be discovered and explored in this exciting program of hands-on projects and experiments in Robotics.  Students will learn how to program an actual microprocessor controlled Robot to perform a variety of tasks in a real-world environment using various sensors in different situations.

The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts

For Grades 3-6

9:00-12:00 - Mask Making
12:00-1:00 - Lunch
1:00-4:00 -   Theater Games

Come enjoy a day of Artistic Creativity by expressing yourself through Mask Making and Theater Games.  The morning will be a hands-on workshop in Mask Making.  Put on a mask and what do you see?  How do you feel?  In this workshop, you will be exposed to masks from many cultures and see how masks serve a variety of purposes.   The Bushnell will provide all the materials and inspiration - come prepared to work hard, get messy and go home with something that you have created yourself!

In the afternoon, get immersed in a workshop on the basics of theater.  Learn a little about movement, storytelling, improvisation, acting techniques, and stage direction.  At the end of the workshop, we'll even put on a play starring YOU!

Saturday High School Program

The High School Program will be for Grades 9-12 and will be on-site at the Hilton Hartford Hotel.

8:45-11:45 a.m.                     DI Dynamic by Destination Imagination
Using only found objects supplied for the challenge, teams of students  
will undertake the task of creating and defending an imaginary city  
against a Colossal Monster and then restoring their city to a peaceful  
state after the creature's attack.  Along the way the team members  
will have to overcome unexpected obstacles as they present a shared  
performance of their solution.

1:00 - 2:15 p.m.                     Teen Panel Discussion with moderator: GROWING UP GIFTED
What challenges do gifted children face growing up with different  
perspectives than their same-aged peers?  What obstacles are there to  
learning and how have gifted students worked within their environments  
to overcome hurdles and make the most out of their childhood/adolescence?   Join our panelists from across Connecticut and the country for an 
informative, moderated discussion on some of the trials and  
tribulations of growing up gifted.

2:15 - 2:30 p.m.                     Snack Break

3:00 - 4:00 p.m.                     Improv Workshop with Sea Tea Improv of Hartford 

QUICK - THINK FAST!
A duck.  A stereo.  A busy supermarket, and a super-hero cape.  What  
do those things have in common?  Nothing at all.  But could you put  
them together in your head and come up with an improvisational  
performance in under five seconds?  The comedy professionals at Sea  
Tea Improv
will show you how!  Part performance, part acting workshop,  
see how fast you can think on your feet as you explore the lighter  
side of creativity.
